I agree, I think the issue is not whether it will hurt the plants, but
whether the plant will absorb any chemicals. (if you're going to eat the
plants) I believe that some wood is treated with an arsenic compound
and some with copper napthate.
I have a raised bed and some flower boxes made from treated lumber, and
haven't had any problems. In fact, we have treated lumber around the
perimeter of our vegetable garden (not too close to the plants) and have
had no problems.
Around here, you have to use treated lumber if it touches the ground. I
put a wooden flower pot upside down in my yard so an injured critter
could hide from my cat. When I picked it up a couple of weeks later, it
had obvious signs of being munched on by carpenter ants (I think).
As for the compost...been there, done that. I told my husband that I
was building a compost heap and he didn't have to play if he didn't want
to. After a few seasons, he finally decided it was a good idea, and now
he has three!
