It's a perennial, Susan. Unfortunately, it is not threadleaf.
It's around 12 - 20" depending on sun or part-shade. It's
rather rambunctious behaviour is why I moved it to part-shade
and a bit moister than it likes. If you don't make it quite so
happy, it will be better behaved.
Like other annoying floppy stems, I try to use neighbors that
will help hold them upright.

I have the very same problem. It seems cruel to just tear the
little guys up when they are so healthy. (except for some of
the lunatic dianthus) And what you describe is precisely what
I've finally done.
I created a raised bed in an out of the way spot in part shade
that is my holding bed. I use it for youngsters and divisions I
don't have room for. I also use it when I'm moving a lot of
plants around and need someplace safe to put them for however
long it takes me to do this. It's a wonderful thing to have if,
like me, you have a tendency to overdo things. I'm even
thinking about making another one. I'm starting up way too many
perennials this year from seed & if I end up with another 200
foxgloves .....
It's also nice to use these holding beds to heel in things you
are not quite ready to plant when they arrive on your doorstep.
