About 20 years ago in our first home (on 1/8 acre) we had a neighbor in the rental
next door who really scared me. I took cuttings from our other privets, which
needed trimming anyway, and just stuck them in the ground, rather thickly in a 6-12"
wide band. Enough of them took to create a fine hedge, which remains today,
according to the current owner. This was in zone 6, Stamford, CT, right next to
Long Island Sound. The soil had had grass for 4 years, but no other gentle
treatment.
If you have privet available locally, this may be your fastest and cheapest
approach!
