Go a step further now. What did you have in that same space after the peony
bloomed? Was it a long blooming heuchera? The sage, I take it, bloomed
most of the season.
I have a number of peonies in my gardens and I always try to put something
taller behind them for later blooms. Of course, this depends on the size of
your beds. One of my favorites is Heliopsis helianthoides 'Summer Sun'.
It's a false sunflower, producing golden yellow flowers from late June to
frost. The foliage is a dark green and attractive even when not in flower.
It will withstand some shade. Grows to 36 inches. A must have in all
gardens! It also goes well with the nepeta (catmint) family.
