We do one at our company every year and it is lots of fun. Here's how
ours works:
Since we generally have lots of plants and don't want to spend hours
at the swap, you get a ticket with a number on it for every two plants
you bring. (You also get to take two plants for every time your
number is picked except in the first round.) A ticket with the same
number goes in a hat.
After we have all the tickets distributed, we all take a little tour
of the plants and each person explains briefly what they brought. (We
also expect folks to write the names of the plant on a stick and put
it in the pot.)
Everyone gets one green ticket and the rest are blue. We pick the
green tickets first so that everyone gets a shot in the first round.
After we do the green round, we just start picking numbers. When your
number is called you can take two plants and move them to your car or
another designated spot.
The swap organizer, who is a master gardener, usually sends out a
company-wide email about two weeks before the event and includes brief
instructions on dividing for those in the company who aren't really
sure how to go about it.
We also accept seeds, pots, and anything else gardening related, but
most folks just bring plants.
There are usually plants left over at the end, but someone almost
always wants them so everything disappears.
I would highly recommend the swap. One person's invasive nightmare is
another person's dream plant. I picked up some mint last year since I
didn't have any in my garden and everyone thought I was crazy, but I
planted it where it is welcome to take over and I was thrilled to get
it.

I'm new to your list & need help. We own a campground in zone 5 & one of
our events on Saturday before Mothers Day is a perennial garden swap. Has
anyone done this before or have any suggestions on how I should set this
up? It will be hard to know who will be here or how many gals will show up
& participate. Any & all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
