HELP and greetings from Palm Desert California ... next to Palm Springs
My partner and I are opening a coffee there is a planting bed outside of
the coffee shop which we are opening, which measures 13 X 16 feet. Our
plan is to coordinate the
color scheme with the proposed interior scheme of the cafe. We were
hoping to base this bed upon a picture in Horticulture magazine (October
1997, p. 42-43 titled 'Line Art') which features a planting that has a
rusty red glow. Plants include Sedum 'Sutumn Joy', Gaura linheimeri, a
correa sp., Hesperaloe parvifolia, Calamogrostis acutifolia 'Stricta",
another grass (possibly Muhlenbergia rigens, or Stipa gigantea).
Although the red tones of the photograph are probably
photographically enhanced, I would like to create such a garden with a
smoky red glow in my Sunset Zone 13 (USDA 9 ) north facing desert
location (120 degree highs, 35 degree lows). All of the plants in the
article except the correa, could probably grow here, but the plants need
to be attractive year round, as it is a commercial space. They will be
in an elevated bed surrounding a redstone sculpture, so ideally they
will not grow more than 2-3 feet tall other than a few accent plants. A
reddish or purple leaf tone (as with hesperaloe) probably adds much to
the feel of the planting.
Thank you advance for your uggestions?
