Ginny,
I put the flats directly on the ground,and yes I do protect from hard frost
-below,say,8Cor 20F. To be on the safe side I move them to non-freezing
conditions when germination starts. Although obviously in nature that
doesn't happen, but neither do most seedlings survive.
We're having a really warm winter - our crocuses are out - excitement is
building.
