I went with the cable, because it was significantly less expensive than
the mylar mats. I made a wooden box, and taped the cable to the bottom,
then covered the cable with sand. I sink seed flat trays down in the
sand, and then set the pots or flats in (it's easier to rearrange the
pots that way). Sometimes, when I get lazy, I stick cuttings directly
into the sand. After 4 or 5 years, the wood is starting to warp a
little, and some of the cable has pulled loose (helped, I think, by my
cat who thought the sand was a great place to dig!). But I've been
extremely happy with the way this works.
