I agree with everyones suggestions to mulch/compost. Just remember to keep
the material away from the BASE of the plants. If you get it too close,
the plant can rot out from too much moisture around the stem/base.
Depending upon the size of the plant and how close you can get to the
actual stem or leaves, be sure to leave three to six inches clear around
each plant
