This is the last thing I am going to say about truffles. I have a book called
North American Wildlife by Readers Digest. Anyway looked up truffle and this
is what I found
False Truffle
Rhizopogon rubescens
size: 1\2-2 in. wide
what to look for:
oval or round, white to yellow fungus
(red spots with age)
inside chammbered,tough,
rubbery,white(dingy yellow
then brown, with age).
Habitat: Wholly or
partially in needle duff
or soil;usually under pines.
It gives a picture of the range but I'm not very good at telling which states
is its range. The range map is very small. It does not cover the whole US. but
hits the both coasts north to south with mailnly the middle of the map not
part of its range
Hope that helps
Kris P who is learning an awful lot about truffles
