Devon, I can't tell you about woodland asters but I can tell you what I have
in a shady spot. However most of these things bloom in the spring and then go
dormant for the hot summer. I don't know about DC but I do know about the heat
in central IL. in the summer. Any way here goes. I have sweet woudruff as a
ground cover, bleeding heart(there is a bleeding heart that doesn't go
dormant), trillium, bluebells, hosta. Ferns and solomn seal also come to mind,
but I don't know if they flower enough for you. Hope that helps.
