Not only do roses provide nice foliage, but they can provide a vertical
effect as well by training a climbing rose on an arch or pillar thus
carrying your color at eye level. Some roses will provide cherry red or
orange hips in the fall as a bonus (looks good with the purple of asters).
Choose a rose that's extra hardy in your area and resistant to mildew and
such ilk (like rugosas), and you won't have to go through all of the
spraying, fertilizing, and fussing that's necessary for the hybrid teas.
This is a good thing if you've got that rose in the middle of your border.
