I may be late on this but here goes. The nursery that I buy most of my
plants from is a quality nursery. He hand picks EVERYTHING he sells.
From trees down to the flats of annuals, I know that the plants are not
diseased or dying from lack of or too much water. The personel know
what they are selling and the best situations for it. But best of all I
know that they will grow in my area. He won't sell delpheniums because
they won't take the humidity. Other nurseries sell them as perennials,
but they only last for one summer if you're lucky.
So I pay a little more for the quality and service I get there, but on
the other hand, other nurseries in the area charge me the same price for
plants with out the service.
I don't buy my plants from WalMart, K-Mart or Loews because no one there
has any real experience with plants. If you want to buy a dead plant
head to my WalMart.
I do travel alot during the summer months and that's when I get my
different or specimen plants. I will however buy mail order now and
then. The quality hasn't been any better than what I can get at my
favorite nursery. Who, by the way, will get me what ever plant I ask
them to pick up for me.
Did you ever ask a sales person a question about a specific plant and
hear "I don't know."? I hate that, and it will keep me from buing
anything there. I like knowing who I'm buying from, that way when and
if I have a problem with that plant I can always go back and ask about
it.
