Hi Anne,
I grow everything with everything, but I like contrasts
in shape, as well as color, so with different lilies I
grow verbena bonariensis (tall, airy, purple),
agastache (tall and spikey, various colors), and
alliums (ball types), goldenrod (plume shaped) and
often geranium at their feet. Things that are good
to hide leggy roses work for leggy lilies too. I also
like artemesias with them (silver and tall, spikey
like 'Silver King').
Traditionally you would think of growing lilies in front
of roses but I have reversed this on a sloping bed
with short roses and tall lilies (trumpet varieties).
For instance I have the 6-7' Anaconda lily with
'Sweet Juliet' (peach colored, 5') rose in front; or
'Hyperion' lily (bright yellow) with blue agastache
behind it and a peachy/pinky/yellow short rose in
front.
Another good combo would be all the new
verbascums -- tall, spikey and a large range of
colors, blooming later like many lilies.
'Course the combinations are endless!

For mine is just a little old-fashioned garden where
the flowers come together to praise the Lord and
teach all who look upon them to do likewise.

Here's a new topic -- how do you all use lilies?
What are your
favorite types and favorite plant combinations with
them? Who
are your favorite suppliers? I order from B&D Lilies
in the
Spring for pots, then move the bulbs into the ground
in the Fall.
I know there's a lily group out there, but would like to
know more
about using these great plants within the perennial
garden context.
Roses & delphiniums are natural companions, of
course -- other ideas?
