Re: Fertilizer

Devon,
I love this topic! As I mentioned a few posts back, you can
fertilize with a weak solution everytime you water. Hook a syphone
(mine is brass and cost around $10.) up to your water outlet, put the
small hose into a 5 gal. bucket and hook up the garden hose. I follow
the directions on the bottle of fish emulsion for application rates for
the first watering. Then refil the 5 gal. bucket. This thins down the
solultion, so I'm not over feeding. I also has a smaller bucket with
just plain water in it so that I can also water with out the fertilizer
if I need to.

I water two different ways, the perennial beds have soaker hoses down
under the mulch. I hook these up to the hose that is attached to the
syphone. After a few hours of watering, I can disconnect and use the
hose to water the pots of annuals and herbs.

You can make compost tea and use that every time you water, it's very
safe for your plants. Put compost into something like cheese cloth or
an old pair of ladies hose, cut off a section about a foot long from the
toe end, that way you only have to tie one end. Add to a bucket of
water and let it steep for a day or so, wring out the excess water, and
put on your plants. The used compost can go back into the compost bin.

Most plants and lawns will do very well with a once or twice a year
application of a good slow release "organic" fertilizer. I like fish
emulsion, sea kelp and worm castings. I hope this information helps you
out.
