I've had the things with yellow flowers where the
seeds pop all over when you weed. But what I have
in the grass actually has white flower heads (if I
don't mow enough) and seems to spread by
runners. I believe that is clover?

Yes, you would find it listed as that. Good picture of
it in Weeds of the
West, if you have access to that or a library that has
it. Leaves look
clover-like, tiny yellow blossoms that give way to
black seeds. It spreads
out from a single root. California burclover is quite
similar, but has
burs instead of the black seeds. Margaret L
