Companions for daylilies

We have a patch of Stella de Oro daylilies at our entrance to our building
here at work. Six months out of the year they look crappy (especially in
the winter). We are looking for something we can grow in the daylily bed
that will look good in early spring and throughout the winter. This bed is
raised, has irrigation, and is sheltered. It has enough sun for the
daylilies to bloom all summer. We have a row of evergreens in the
background. Our building is a metallic silver -- very modern looking. We
don't want a cottage garden look; something very professional looking and
sleek to compliment our five-year-old round building.

My first suggestion was dianthus, which stays green all year around and has
the bonus of spring bloom. I am wondering how it would grow in among the
daylilies, however.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would look good with these
daylilies and would look good year around? We don't want something taller
than the daylilies.
