Re: Michigan Bulb

Margaret:

Read the Journal and had a good laugh. Thanks. Reminds me of when a neighbor
asked me what to do with a nest of abandoned baby rabbits he had found in his
lawn, and without thinking about his feelings, the gardener in me said, kill
'em. (Then I said, sorry, leave them alone, their mother will return to them
after dark).

I was poring over the catalogs today looking for something different and
spectacular to grow this year and came across Eryngium giganteum. I remember the
story I heard about a certain Miss Wilmott who used to secretly scatter its
seeds in her friends' gardens. Then it was a surprise to the garden owners when
next year up grew these tall, silvery plants which came to be known, and still
are, as Miss Wilmott's Ghost.

White Flower Farm says they are hardy to zone 4, biennial, but make seedlings
readily; Thompson & Morgan have them listed as a hardy perennial,zones 6 - 9,
short-lived, also seeding easily. Does anyone on the list have experience with
them?
