Re: Help-roots eaten.


Agree with Dean - definitely sounds like voles.  In between cat
populations, had about all my Hosta roots eaten - huge clumps would
come right out of the ground.  Luckily, they are tough guys and
regenerated.  A hunting cat is the best vole deterrent.  Lacking one,
planting in wire cages works and backfilling around plants with sharp
gravel helps as they aren't that keen on digging in rocks. 

Look for quarter size holes and small tunnels just at soil level,
like under the mulch...

The only other culprit I can think of are the larvae of the vine
weevil - small, fat white grubs about a quarter to half an inch long
- who can clean the roots off a plant in no time flat.  If those are
the culprits, you'd see them when you pulled up the remains of the
Sedum.  

Luckily, Sedum will root easily.  Stick your stems in a pot full of
sand and keep moist and you'll have a lot of plants in no time.
