Hacking up a sedum??

Anyway, this is to remind you that now is the time to cut down
certain plants to half the height. Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is one;
fall-blooming chrysanthemums are another. (Is Chrysanthemum still called
Dendranthema? Name change is bad enough; why change its gender?)

My sedum 'Autumn Joy' is about 3 feet tall and looks very close to blooming.
Why would I cut it down by half at this time?
Is this suggestion a la Tracy DiSabato-Aust's 'Well-Tended Perennial Garden"?
I always cut my asters way back early in July, to achieve her suggested
layered effect, but haven't tried it with sedums.
