I have something very like what you describe, but it s a self-sowing annual,
coreopsis tinctoria. Easily started from seed, reseeds reliably in all
kinds of combinations of this gold and mahogany. Everyone comments on it
when it's in bloom, which is mid-summer to frost. Full sun.
