Bill,
I'm right down river from you in Louisville, KY. My buddleas have been in
bloom for almost a month! I have three different varieties and they all
started within a week of each other.
Since the original poster wanted something that would bloom with her
asiatic lilies (mine have long since been a memory....) I was thinking of
early summer. In which case, I would think for us the larkspur and the
adenophora would have been in full flush.
Having said that, I think that a background of buddleas with dahlias in the
front are quite a show right now. Buddlea 'Black Knight' and any blood red
dahlia, like 'Bishop of Llandaff' are made for each other. I was hoping
that my goldenrod would start blooming, too, but it hasn't hinted that it
would join in the chorus just yet.
Buddleas are especially nice with another type of lily that's blooming now:
oriental lilies. Mine are joined with a white buddlea in the background.
If anyone hasn't opted for a few of these bulbs they are missing out on a
spectacular double whammy of spicy perfume and exotic good looks.
