Duncan,
I was also going to mention bamboo for your situation. THe first thing that
came to my mind when you described your narrow space was, GREAT! You can
plant any of those "running, invasive, aggressive" types that anywhere else
would be an annoyance, but here would be naturally hemmed in on two sides,
and free to go down the line.
Bamboo would be lovely, I especially like the black, but I don't know if it
has much screening effect initially. It does have a nice sound when the wind
goes throught it, though, if you have a porch or bedroom window nearby.
