That's the tree, Claire. I'm 53 and read this novel in my mid-20s, although
it was not a new book then. And we know that many people come back to
gardening in their 40s and 50s after a childhood interest, so I suspect there
are more people on this list who recognize the book than you might think.
The Ailanthus IS an interesting tree, although a nuisance most of the time.
It grows rampantly in my woods. The wood is very soft and relatively easy to
cut down. However, I have read that cutting this tree stimulates the
production of new shoots from the roots. They come up everywhere here and I
am often pulling them out of my beds. And this tree is incredibly fast
growing. A new sucker can grow 2-3 feet in a couple of months with ease.
