In my experience, the Lamium maculatum cultivars ('White Nancy', 'Red Nancy', 'Pink Pewter', 'Chequers', etc.) make a fuller, hardier, reasonably weedless groundcover than Lamium/Lamiastrum galeobdolan which tends to be taller and more open.  The thing about plants growing differently in different areas is certainly true, though.
 
There's that one Lamiastrum cultivar, 'Herman's Pride', which seems to have only one purpose: to attract slugs and destructive insects away from other plants.  Want slug-free hostas?  Plant a bed of 'Herman's Pride' nearby.  ;-)
