I have Hortus II having found it easy to come by when Hortus III was
publised. Hortus II was copyrighted in 1930. Several updates followed.
Hortus III was copyrighted in 1976 and never updated.
MacMillan, the publisher, has announced formally that it will not publish a
Hort IV as the third number did not make money for them. My source is an
article in a nursery mgt. mag. The projected cost of of a new edition is
more than a publisher will assume. The British publications have more than
one source of financing. I am pretty sure that their Plant Finder is online.
It would be on the RHS site.
So.........unless another publisher or a non-profit group buy the rights from
MacMillan there will be no Hortus IV. Someone has to finance the research
and compiling.
I think Hortus III is useful now and then. There are fairly complete lists
of species for most garden plants. All explorations that produce new plants
cannot hope to have those plants listed anywhere except catalogs for a long
while. Considering the constant flow of plants since the beginning of this
country, no book is ever to be complete. On taxonomic changes, I think there
is a synonym list from the International Nomenclature something or other.
This is more than I can manage and still keep the weeds down. Marge will
know the nomenclature group name.
BTW, Barnes and Noble bought partial rights for periodical reprints of Hortus
III and it can be purchased for $19.95 in two volumes softcover, boxed, now
and then. Book searching on the web is a sometime hobby of mine. Not every
BN carries the item but your local store can find one that does.
