Van B will send you some dead-looking scraggly things that are supposed to
be bare-root ferns. Mine never came up except for one that made a valiant
effort and sent up one frond before it swiftly died. You get what you pay
for. Go with companies that specialize in these sorts of things.
Van B is good for things that are solid enough to last in the mail, like
bulbs. If you don't really care what you're getting, but want something
that looks like the picture in the catalog, go for it. If you are picky
and want EXACTLY the plant they are claiming to send you, look elsewhere.
Some people on another list claim Van B is very good about substituting
lilies and if you're using them for breeding purposes, you'll want exactly
what they claim to be selling you.
