Since people have spoken up for the other two (both fine books, I might add),
let me put in a good word for Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of
Perennials. I often recommend that book for beginners. It has a bit of
everything you need to get started -- design principles and ideas, sample
garden plans, planting combinations, cultivation tips, ways to deal with
pests and problems, etc. -- all from an environmentally sound point of view
and in easy to understand terms and a convenient format. The encyclopedia
section has several pages of good information about each specific perennial.
It's not a comprehensive list, but is a very good start. My horticultural
library now takes up an entire room and I still use this book. It was my
first perennials encyclopedia and it served me well.
I think what you are going to have to do is buy all three books! --Janis
