true red

My lychnis coronaria (rose campion) are a magenta color, i.e., a red with a
fair amount of purple in it. On the other hand, the maltese cross (lychnis
chalcedonica) is a much more orange-red. Some of the other lychnis, such as
Vesuvius, arkwrightii, and so on are orange-red too. Consider also the
heleniums--some are mahogany red but some are orange-red. What is true red
anyway?
