Technically, the oriental poppy 'Brilliant' is listed as scarlet, which is
"a red" but not true red. The true red cultivar is 'Beauty of
Livermore.'
Other astilbes to consider: 'Red Sentinel', 'Glut', 'Granat', and
'Montgomery.'
Val, is your 'Fanal' really red, like in the photo in Shady Oaks
catalogue? They describe it as "blood red" -- I don't think Crayola makes
a "Blood" crayon. ;-) May I ask where you got it? I saw
'Fanal' at Bloomfest in Detroit two years ago and put it on my "must have"
list. Now I have three of them, from three different sources (not Shady
Oaks), and none of them have red blooms -- in fact, each is a completely
different color, all are different shades of reddish-purple (haven't taken my
Crayola box out to identify each color). I've been the victim either
of poor labeling or randomly acquired seeds. :-(
