My books all say full sun, but most clematis books are written by the
British (very cool climate). I live in Oregon, also a cool climate. Mine
is in part shade or shade for part of the day, sun the rest, and it blooms
fine. It does bloom very late.
I say go for it -- you probably have plenty of heat where you live. If it
doesn't work, move it in a year or two. I doubt you could kill it except
with a blow torch.
