Louise,
Best if you sow as soon as possible. Allium seed has a short life
span - one year for many and two years for some, but germination will
be better if it is fresh seed.
Allium vary in their germination requirements..some are simple warm
germinators and will germinate pretty quickly. Others require one and
some two cold stratification periods.
I don't know the species of 'Purple Sensation', so have no clue what
it needs. You might check Tom Clothiers seed database to see if he
has it listed if you know the species.
I'd sow now and leave them outside (assume it's fairly warm in UK
now). If they don't germinate in a few weeks, then leave them
outside for winter and see what happens come spring. If nothing,
then leave them in the pots for another year. Cover pots with
poultry grit to prevent seed from washing in rain. Also helps
prevent mosses and liverworts. Cover pots with screenwire to keep
debris, other seed and critters out of them and make sure they don't
dry out.
If you want to hurry things, you can try warmth first. If nothing in
a month, then refrigerate for 30 to 60 days and try warmth again for
a month. If nothing from this, try the refrigeration again.
