<< Claire, I think you may be wrong about the species you are growing.
It was my belief, backed by several textbooks that rupifragum is a short
poppy from Spain, with thin wiry stems. There are single and double
varieties but it only comes in orange.

You are correct on the species. I checked this today, a beautiful cool and
dry day in NY - Oh Joy- and see it is called brick red. It is around 30 cm.
My first seeds were from Thompson and Morgan and I have no accurate
recollection of those plants. The second lot ( I save only seed packs and
hope I have enough energy at the end of the day to make notes on them -
sometimes stapling them to the notebook I also try to keep) were from the
British firm "Unwin's" purchased at the Boston Flower show. These were
rupifragum hybrids and were a real poppy red. The last lot were seedex seeds
(NARGS) and described as 60 cm. so I may not have had rupifragum. The last
lot were what I described, good looking plants but living over just one year.
I thought they might behave as biennial here as many plants do in zone 4.
I did not write all this stuff as I think it is fairly boring to most but
thank you for calling it to my attention. I guess if I grew them again I
would use true species seed and hope that was as described.
I have tried nearly every poppy I could find and most of them are not around
any more. I have orientals, some californias and lots and lots of opium
poppies. Opium poppy seed is great trading material on eBay for reasons
unknown to me. It is not what people think. Thanks for this note Bob.
