Re: Creeping Charlie

Another welcome to the list, Charlotte.

As Claire said, once you've got creeping Charlie (Glechoma
hederacea), AKA ground ivy, you've pretty much got it forever. It's
really a rather pretty plant, which, if it did not have total
illusions of world conquest would be a nice groundcover. I've
actually read of people using it for same. Problem with it is that
it wants to run over the other things - more precious things- planted
in the garden and a mono culture of groundivy is not exactly my idea
of a 'garden'.

I have parts of my garden where I literally roll it up like carpet
once a year. Got really annoyed with it last summer in one area and
pulled every last bit and see that it isn't coming back as strongly
this year...but it ain't dead yet. It is a close relation to the
Energizer Bunny.

Persistent pulling from beds and borders will eventually discourage
it, but you have to get it right away when it comes back from a pull
- before it has time to do a lot of photosynthesizing. Where
you've cleared an area, a good mulch will help keep seeds from
germinating and make any rebounders easier to pull when you see them.
Where it's gotten into the center of a plant you want, you sometimes
have to dig up the clump and wash off the soil to get the interlopers
roots out and replant the plant you want.

A royal pain in the derrière is groundivy! I don't hate it as much
as garlic mustard, poa annua or bitter cress or mugwort, however:-)
