Hi all,
Below is a recipe for slug control. It comes from a lady by the name of Diana
who works at Wade and Gatton Nurseries in Bellville, OH, USA. Van Wade of W & G
is very well known in the Hosta biz.
As to why some hostas are more tasty than others (to slugs) - it usually depends
on what is known as "substance". The heavier the substance (leaf thickness) the
less tasty to slugs. While I'm far from an expert on hostas, substance seems to
be the key factor I keep hearing in regards to slugs.
Diana's Slug Recipe
1 gallon water
1 cup ammonia
a few drops dish soap
Spray the foliage and saturate around the crowns. She said when the
slugs are bad she treats once a week. When things aren't too bad, then
about once every two weeks. She said this is also a great fertilizer.
Karen, who last summer joined the ranks of hostaholics!

P.S. Claire mentioned how her Blue Angel stays blue till it rains alot. The blue
coloring in hostas is due to a wax coating. This can eventually wear off (rain,
heat, sun) causing the plant to lose its blue color.
