Cimicifuga Racemosa problems

I planted a gallon-sized Cimicifuga Racemosa in the fall of 2000 while in flower. Spring 2001 the foliage came up beautifully but just as the plant was setting buds in late July, the stems started wilting one at a time until all the stems were gone,
before it could flower. I thought the plant had died for some reason, but surprisingly, this spring the foliage started reappearing again and the plant grew beautifully until now, when the same thing is happening. What could be the problem? It is planted
in a shady, moist area against the foundation with hostas and astilbe which are doing fine. Could the proximity to the foundation be a problem from the ph point of view? I am careful about keeping it well watered. Any help would be much appreciated - I
love this plant and am afraid that it is going to die before it flowers again this year.
Thanks,
Monisha
PS: I'm in Zone 6 NY, where it has been quite dry, but I've been watering this plant faithfully since I knew it had problems last year.
