I also just cut mine off, leave them right in the pot with the soil and put
them in a crawl space under my house. It does not freeze there. I do nothing
to them until I pull them out in May, water them and put them on the deck.
Mine are just beginning to bloom now. I do exactly the same with calla
lilies and elephant's ear. Every other year, I take them out of the pots in
the fall and divide them, repot and stick under the house. So much easier
than when I used to dig them all up, let them dry, and pack in paper bags,
then replant them all in the spring.
