Believe me, Claire, it caught officials here in Wisconsin quite by surprise. They think the disease might have been brought in by elk that were imported from the west to be raised on some of the local "game farms".
The deer herd here in WI is quite large and really dependent upon hunting to be thinned. If hunting is significantly decreased because of CWD, the herd may have to be thinned by other means. As it is, nearly 100,000 are killed each year by motor vehicles alone!
Why we needed to import elk when we already have too many deer is a bit beyond me, but I freely admit, I lack the hunting gene (unless applied to plants).
