Re: delphinium

Gale,
Well, good news -- someone HAS invented a delphinium that will grow in places
with hot summers.

Terry Dowdeswell, a delphinium grower in New Zealand, who is, or was, a
perennials lister (Terry, are you still here?) developed the New Millennium
Delphiniums and they are magnificent. Those in the USA can only buy seed on his
website, but he is marketing them in the US and I was able to buy a plant at my
local nursery last year. So far, it is doing beautifully in the heat of July in
St. Louis (also Zone 6). I am thrilled with it and plan to get more. I should
note that, although Delphiniums bloom better in full sun, I grow mine in
morning sun with some afternoon shade. (The old head in the sun, feet in the shade
trick.) Although I have never been able to grow delphs in full sun here
before, I'm going to plant one of the New Millennium's there this fall and see how
it does next summer.

Belladonna Delphiniums also do better in heat. The Belladonna's have smaller
flowers and are not as showy, but they are lovely and easy to grow.

You can find information about growing delphiniums in the USA on the
Dowdeswell Delphinium website --
