RE: perennials DIGEST V3 #42

It helps to establish hydrangeas in the spring in zone 5b and to water
well and regularly the first summer (this year I included some polymer
water retention crystals in the soil just under the root ball). The
oakleaf is one of the hardiest, so getting it established is the main
problem and usually more a question of moisture than of cold. The
russian sage needs excellent drainage and then it is sufficiently hardy,
but again I would start in spring.

Isabelle, in my experience in zone 5b, neither oakleaf hydrangea nor
perovskia establish well with fall planting. Even with spring planting,
I have found the hydrangea often dies over the winter, though once you
can get good sized plants established, they are fully hardy here.
