Boy, oh Boy, am I Confused!!!
I love the red-leaved Lobelias!
And I finally got 1 to survive the winter for me.
I put in a couple small bog gardens last fall and planted 1 in there last
fall. It survived and is doing wonderfully!!! So I have bought some more this
summer. I was just planting another and reading the label. Then I went to read
the label on others I have. That's where my confusion lies.
I bought 2 recently on clearance from a pond suppler. I planted 1 in the pond
and the other on the East side of my house with lots of Soil Moist Crystals.
Then I read the label --
Cardinal flower -- Lobelia fulgens -- the label didn't give any
hardiness info so looked it up on the Net - Again more confusion -- Some say its
not hardy here in USDA z5 while others list it as hardy to z3.
The label from the plant that survived the winter in my little bog garden
says --
Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' - Lobelia Reina Victoria -- only info I could
find on the Net for this 1 was in a foreign language, possibly Spanish.
The label on another says --
Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria' -- Info from the Net says
Half-hardy Annual. Maybe this is why this plant has never survived the winter for me.
But other sites list it as being hardy in Zones 4 - 9 and can be used as a
shallow water plant.
Other labels I have saved from failures of previous years -- Lobelia x
speciosa 'Queen Victoria', and, Lobelia splendens 'Queen Victoria'
Can any of you, Please, sort this mess out for me?
Are these all the same plant?
Thanx for your help, Barbara.
Rock Island, IL
