Re: Any updated news on the Hosta virus?

Dear Joanie,

One more advice: Neveb buy plants from DeRee. They are selling virus infected
hostas, and not true to name. This year I have had to kill some of my hostas,
cause they showed virus symptomes. (Tulips and lilies are also virus infected
from this company, unfortunately...)

Bye,
Jani, Z5a

Subject: Any updated news on the Hosta virus?

  One more question:

Many of you were very helpful last year when I had a disastrous delivery of
  Hosta laden with a virus.

During further research I learned was that most of our Hosta supply comes
into the US, as tissue cultures from a couple of European countries which
apparently are aware that much of their export is diseased. These cultures
are
delivered to 2 or 3 US growers who then grow them on to varying degrees and
then
sell them to the green industry.

It was further suggested by a number of sources that the USDA was
considering a moratorium on all Hosta importation, and possibly all sales,
until a
solution to the rampant and devastating problem could be found. The virus
is
easily spread to healthy Hosta in our gardens by pruners or by a tiny bit
of root
left behind after removing an effected plant.

My recent surfing has not revealed much of any news since last year. Does
anyone know what's happening, if anything? I adore Hosta and will not
purchase
any more, nor transplant what I have, until I'm sure it's safe to do so.

Is this virus international in scope? If so, what mitigations are
  contemplated or in place?

  Many thanks,

  Joanie Anderson
