Hmm - I used to send cut flowers or potted plants from my garden to my kids teachers and they loved that we had made that effort. But I could see one or two of them complaining we were cheapskates when it came to those gift occasions, when some parents sent gift cards and I sent another plant.

I think there are many on this list who are dedicated amateur, if not professional gardeners. A very interesting letter appeared in the column "Dear Prudence" in the online magazine Slate.com. It is the very last letter in the column, signed " An Alleged Cheapskate". I just thought that many of my fellow gardeners might find it interesting. http://www.slate.com/id/2260483?wpisrc=newsletter It's also interesting to check out some of the comments by readers regarding this letter. My apologies if this post is considered too off topic, but it sure would be nice to see a little more life back on this list.
