I love my "odd balls".
I grow teasel - a selfseeding biannual that that birds love and
tickles be to have as it was used to comb fleeces and flax.
Alluim - Hair - no flower but hundreds of little plantlets

Besides the "normal" perennials I grow and sometimes cut for bouquets to
bring into work (a medical laboratory with primarily female staff), I also
grow a number of odd-ball plants which I bring in if they are blooming or
just for effect. While I'm not sure it's deserved, it's earned me the
nick-name of "The Plant Whisperer". I'm sure I've been called worse!

Hmm - I used to send cut flowers or potted plants from my garden to
my kids teachers and they loved that we had made that effort. But I
could see one or two of them complaining we were cheapskates when it
came to those gift occasions, when some parents sent gift cards and I
sent another plant.

I think there are many on this list who are dedicated amateur, if not
professional gardeners.
A very interesting letter appeared in the column "Dear Prudence" in the
online magazine Slate.com. It is the very last letter in the
column, signed
" An Alleged Cheapskate". I just thought that many of my fellow gardeners
might find it interesting.

It's also interesting to check out some of the comments by
readers regarding
this letter.
My apologies if this post is considered too off topic, but it sure would be
nice to see a little more life back on this list.
