Mail*Link¨ SMTP Raccoons stole my Astilbes!
This is the second year in the row that two astilbes have been nicked by
raccoons.
Okay, I didn't actually see the culprits, but I don't think I can blame the
squirrels on this caper. The astilbes were just babies and the varmints took
the whole plant, from roots to leaf tip. It's as if I never planted them!
Argh!
Two slightly bigger astilbes still stand in my garden. The two that were
pinched were in the "wildest" part of my fairly tame city garden. I'm heading
to the nursery to buy some LARGE astilbes this weekend.
Does any one have any suggestions on how to protect them from the bandits?
I keep telling my husband that the fortune I keep spending on perennials is an
INVESTMENT, but it's hard to justify when the plants keep vanishing.
My mother says "just give up on growing astilbes, dear", but I'm not that
smart! Help me outwit the raccoons!
