Delphinium Questions

I don't take any chances with my dephiniums falling over in the wind and
rain. Each plant is staked with four tall green bamboo poles and tied with
green string. I follow the instructions in the Sunset Western Garden Book as
far as the care is concerned. When new shoots develop in spring, remove all
but the two or three strongest and apply complete fertilizer alongside
plants. Bait for slugs. Stake flower stalks early. After bloom, cut back
flower spikes, leaving foliage at the bottom; after new shoots are several
inches high, cut old stalks to ground. Fertilize to encourage good second
bloom in late summer, early fall. I always get a second and third strong
bloom from the plants. They are about five years old, so guess I am doing
something right. Hope this helps.
