Re: Attack of the Japanese Beetles

Hi Cheryl -

I've been researching this because my beetles are here, too. Several
experts says that using just a couple of bags could be worse than doing
nothing if they attrack beetles from the whole neighborhood. I'm giving it
a try this year, though.

I'm also hand-picking (not really touching, though, if I can help it!). I
carry a bucket with a shallow layer of soapy water and knock them in. They
are easier to catch early and late in the day, when they are less likely to
fly and buzz you. Maybe it's pointless but at least there are fewer of them
to breed.

You can use heavy-duty poisons but my reading says you have to reapply
constantly, and the pesticides kill ALL insects. I have too many bees and
good bugs to risk that. Not to mention the health of my toddler and myself
(I'm pregnant).

In my garden I have thousands of plants of many genera, and the bugs bother
only a few. I concentrate on protecting them. I have a small linden tree
which is their favorite, so I visit it several times a day if I can manage
it.

Good luck!
