Chris,
I love Geraniums so much that they overcrowd my tiny backyard, and I
am always looking for a new north-east exposed garden to give them more
room, a choice that upsets my closest Italian friends! In my zone (like
zone 8, I suppose) they grow better in shade or,at least, in shade
during the afternoon.
In dense, even dry shade, I get the best results from G. nodosum, G. phaeum
and G. macrorrhizum. G.nodosum has a very long flowering season, from
spring to autumn. I grow plants with lilac and with dark pink flowers.
Among my favourites are G. phaeum var.lividum with charming pale
bluish-lilac flowers, and G. phaeum 'Album', with a lot of clear white
flowers and yellow stamens.
Then, my best G. macrorrhizum is 'Ingwersen's Variety' with lilac-pink
flowers.
I love also the little G. robertianum 'Celtic White', with white flowers
and light green foliage.
In morning sun, all the G.x oxonianum group does very well. It includes all
hybrids between G. endressi and G. versicolor. My favourite is G.x
oxonianum ' Hollywood', a strong plant with pale pink flowers purple
veined. Its long stems are now climbing nicely into a rose. Then, I
like G. x riversleianum 'Mavis Simpson' .It has grey-green foliage and a
lot of milky-pink flowers on long trailing stems until October .
My best late flowering Geranium is 'Dilys'. Last year it had some flowers
in early December.
You already know the best books on Geraniums from previous messages. I'd
like to add a little book,' My Experience Growing Hardy Geraniums' by
Phoebe Noble (Trio Investments Ltd.,Sidney BC), a plantswoman living in
British Columbia. There are no pictures, only leaves silhouettes, but it is
a delightful reading, enjoyable as a conversation with a friendly gardener.
Best Wishes,
Marisa Amadio, Alessandria, Italy
