Hi Nan,
Something that I've never been good at -- mentioning where I'm located.
I'm usually gardening in the Midwest near Chicago and in central Illinois,
so that's USDA zones 5a and 5b.
Ours is usually deciduous, but because it's a woody plant the leaves
come back from the woody stems instead of starting over at the base. Akebia
quinata is REALLY hardy, so the only reason that I have for cutting it back
is to keep it contained. It will do equally well in sun or shade, but
probably won't be as floriferous in the shade.
Chris
