One of the worst messes I ever had in my kitchen resulted from using a
mayonnaise jar for canning tomatoes.  The heat broke it, and I not only had
the mess in the canning kettle to clean, but also the outside of all of the
good canning jars in the kettle.  Since then, I've used only regular
canning jars for canning.  Margaret
